Dovedale Curriculum
Curriculum Statement - Dovedale Primary School
At Dovedale Primary School, we believe that children learn best when lessons are stimulating, engaging and challenging. Our primary focus is to raise aspirations, foster personal pride in achievement, and ensure learning has purpose and relevance. Each unit and lesson is carefully designed around the needs of our pupils and community, with clear learning outcomes linked to the key building blocks of each subject.
Intent
We want every child, including those with SEND and our most vulnerable learners, to be learning for life. Our curriculum provides experiences that develop memorable knowledge, understanding and skills. We recognise that deep, long-term learning happens when children make meaningful links between concepts, build on prior knowledge, and apply learning in new contexts.
Our priority is to broaden pupils’ knowledge and life experiences, building their resilience, confidence and self-belief. We provide equal access for all learners, nurturing a love of learning and offering a wide range of enriching opportunities. We want our children to understand the wider world and their own spiritual, social, emotional and physical development, ensuring they are ready for the next stage of their education.
Implementation
Our curriculum is ever-evolving, carefully structured to promote progression and connectivity between subjects. Each subject area is built on a progressive framework of key learning that ensures knowledge is systematically developed from year to year.
Before teaching new content, teachers use pre-learning tasks or retention activities to assess prior knowledge and plan next steps effectively. Opportunities to review and consolidate learning are embedded throughout.
A love of reading and literature is woven through all subjects. High-quality, purposeful texts enrich learning across the curriculum, supporting pupils to research, question and develop subject-specific skills. By becoming independent, resilient learners, our pupils are empowered to Imagine, Believe and Achieve.
Educational experiences such as workshops, trips, and visitors enrich learning, while extra-curricular clubs and activities provide further opportunities for personal growth and curiosity.
Impact
We evaluate progress in every subject using our clearly defined key learning outcomes. Subject teams, working closely with the Assessment and Curriculum Leaders, monitor standards and ensure consistent quality across the school.
The impact of our curriculum is measured through book looks, data analysis, pupil voice, and lesson observations, helping us maintain high expectations and continuous improvement.
